LONDON : OUR SPIRITUAL HOME

For more than seventeen years, Morris+Company has based its operations in London’s east end. During this period of steady growth, we have occupied a variety of spaces; in converted warehouses, above shops, and in basements, often sharing desk space with others. But irrespective of location, our studio space has always represented a home from home. A place of exchange, a spiritual base for ideas, dialogue, creative endeavour, of innovation and exploration.

But, the pandemic has surfaced many new truths which have challenged perceived norms, most notably that all the creative moves of an architecture practice need to occur in the studio. Technological advances coupled with the necessities of a global pandemic have amplified the potential for flexible and asynchronous working patterns. These factors simultaneously raise important questions about the role of the office, the potential for distributed working methods, and the combined role of technology and physical space. And, as we approach our third decade, in which our systems, methods and team have evolved, the opportunity to reflect and transform our studio operations has arisen.

In 2022 we will relocate to new premises, further east into the beating heart of Hackney, London’s truly creative district. Occupying a former fashion showroom, and distributed across three interconnected floors, our new studio will be deeply representative of the culture of our practice. It will be spatially generous, publicly accessible, purposefully organised, and realised through circular design principles. It will facilitate truly flexible working methods through cloud based technologies. It will be a venue for events. It will be a workshop for production and experiment. It will co-host other businesses and creatives. And it will exemplify Morris+Company’s cultural philosophy of fairness, support, mentorship and awareness; a House of Ideas.
